TKPS Episode #411-The Kyle Phoenix Show

Return to editing TKPS EPISODE #411-The Kyle Phoenix Show Identity Series (Part 2) of The Exploration of Black Activist Rakem Balo...

Videos Music Rhythms

Supposedly one of the most expensive videos ever made. Now, as you know, pop icons are dropping like a chorus of flies at a Raid factory the innovative and imagination of the video strikes home. There are so few event videos anymore because it's become de rigeur to create a video. And of course, they're expensive. So something without a storyline and just focused on the visuals is striking. Janet and her team are also accomplished at aligning herself with artists that are not suddenly jumping into hit land but have a longevity to them that will serve over the long-term. What remains to be seen is where her career will go post-50, post baby. There's only so long she should be bouncing around a stage to a remixed Control but at the same time, I don't know if she's built up the chops to be an actress continuously. The pop diva is almost trapped by our familiarity with her to the point where she can't settle down into a nice Netflix series....because you know by 2020 we'll all have a Netflix series, right?

Enjoy!

Meghan Trainor - All About That Bass on The Kyle Phoenix Blog

I heard this on the radio and then they sang it on black-ish and I looked it up and I couldn't stop watching it for like two weeks.

It's funny she's less bubblegum and more hip hop English hardcore.

Enjoy!

'Prince Darling Nikki' Song and Video on The Kyle Phoenix Blog

I sob at this scene!!

I have a couple of movie scenes that just wreck me because it's so REAL.

Ok, there';s this one and then in the Last of The Mohicans where he has to leave her behind and tells her to do whatever she has to do to stay alive, he will find her. But stay alive! And then he has to leave her (because you know the war tribe is after him but only she and her family are protected under a treaty) and there's this moment where you know he's telling her whatever she has to do, WHATEVER, all is understood and forgiven, as long as she stays alive.

And in Breaking the Waves at the end of the movie....I don't want to spoil it for you. But Bess keeps her promise.

Oooh, oooh and in I Am Love when Tilda Swinton and her maid have an exchange, a look at the end of the film and the soundtrack bursts with their shared, understated rapport---I lost it at the Lincoln Center Cinema!

Oh, back to Darling Nikki.

The guitar work is amazing.

Eric Clapton was asked what's it like being the best guitarist in the world.

And he said:

"Ask Prince."

Ok, now it's time for freaky deaky fun AMAZE BALLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLSSSSSS.

Because she's had to manage her health issues we don't' really get to experience the breadth of work Missy Elliot has in her. I'm sure we'll see amazing things from her.

En Vogue - Giving Him Something He Can Feel (Ultra High Quality) on The Kyle Phoenix Blog

Enjoy!

Yes, Sparkle brought this home from back in the day but En Vogue made their mark with this song here. And the audience of the gin joint----wall to wall PHDs---pumped, handsome and delicious!

En Vogue (feat. Salt N Pepa) - Whatta Man on The Kyle Phoenix Blog

Too many people in this song. All I can think about is En Vogue not getting more than a nickel a piece for cd sales. I mean just listen to this talent. It's like singers can't read or go on Amazon or go to a library. Maxine talked about Sylvia Rhone forcing contracts on them. I mean now I understand why I don't know a Rihanna song but I've seen her on billboards. Music don't pay.

I worry about my celebrities, do you?

En Vogue - "Don't Let Go" (Official Music Video) on The Kyle Phoenix Blog

En Vogue? A mess.

Worse than TLC and Pebbles.

They're like half and half now because NO ONE gets paid on like the first two or three albums. Maxine said they were getting 2 cents per album when she quit in 1997.

WTF?

Lucy Pearl was dope though, I bought the CD.

This here song though----let's just say it's not only on the "Fuck: Playlist but well it was an "Our Song".

Toni Braxton - He Wasn't Man Enough on The Kyle Phoenix Blog

Robin Givens reportedly had to have Michael Jai White replaced because he reminded her too much of Mike Tyson. Fun Fact # 1.

Fun Fact #2 Robin reported that Mike Tyson is the only man to bring her to orgasm in missionary position consistently.

I know, I know....I know lots of odd trivia facts.

Toni named her sons Levi and Denim and Button and Sandal and Buckle and something else.

I didn't know there were all them sisters.

LaFace Records told her they'd take her but not the Braxton Brood.

Toni bought Louis Vuitton gold plated silverware (goldware?). As she was chastising her for not watching every payment and check even Oprah said she'd never heard of such outlandishness. When Oprah tells you she doesn't know where to buy something...you've gone off the financial rails.

Whitney Houston - It's Not Right But It's Okay on The Kyle Phoenix Blog

Ok, I liked Whitney. I wasn't in love (like with Janet or Me'Shell or Prince) but I liked Whitney's edge. She seemed like someone you'd never get bad service at a bar or store with, you know?

But this song, right here?

No, no, no....this DRESS! Sometimes there's like a spot on costumer who does something a little daring but at the same time catches the whole energy of the song.

I love this song! Even the remixes!

Enjoy!

Mariah Carey - Honey on The Kyle Phoenix Blog

Ok, Eddie Griffith, Brett Ratner, P. Diddy? This is just fun and adventuresome. A real "James Bond" feel to it and her skimpy clothing is finally appropriate!

Mariah Carey - Fantasy on The Kyle Phoenix Blog

Ok, she can seem a little kooky...and then I caught myself watching two episodes of Mariah's World and she's very savvy/conscious of herself, her fame and her environment. Ten years trapped in a mansion with Tommy Motola didn't create no dummy. She's really, really smart but at the same time she's rarely in clothing. She's having a lot of fun. And the older she gets, the Blacker she looks. My musings on Mariah.

Klymaxx - Meeting In The Ladies Room on The Kyle Phoenix Blog

Now this right here, this right here is more than a song....it's like a running consciousness peek into this woman's head. Anyone who has been in a club and had some drama going on at the same time knows this song frontwards and backwards---you're in the rhythm, the groove and then you're not because you're back in your head and then reality. The beauty of some music is how it transport one to a new reality, a hyper reality.

Did I mention her hair and outfit. The video is worth it just for that LOOK!

That LOOK!.

Don't let no one bring you down to the level of a BM.

Basic Man.

HA!!!

Mtume - Juicy Fruit on The Kyle Phoenix Blog

Now yes, I was officially too young for Mtume's Juicy Fruit----in fact, I'm not sure my thirties makes me old enough for it but if you wanna you know make some babies or make some sweat or make some noise, this is the groove right here. I have a playlist on my IPod simply titled "Fuck" and this is on there several times (the playlist is a few hours long).

I created a comic book character to this song.

You'll see the graphic novel soon. But in the meantime, they really turn this song out. By this video they'd gotten down the dance number and Sheila E is more confident in going to town on the drums!

Sheila E- The Glamorous Life on The Kyle Phoenix Blog

Enjoy!

"The Glamorous Life" was originally intended to be recorded by the short-lived replacement act for Vanity 6, girl group Apollonia 6. Prince allegedly had several tracks lined up for the trio to record for their 1984 debut album (and by some accounts, their follow up album as well) but abandoned the idea when he learned that lead singer Apollonia Kotero had no desire to stay in the group beyond her contractual obligations as designed for her movie role in Purple Rain.

Prince decided to give the song to Sheila E. who was fresh off her duet on Prince's "Erotic City". "The Glamorous Life" would be recorded by Sheila and go on to launch her solo career.

Mary J. Blige - Just Fine on The Kyle Phoenix Blog

Trekking from the C train to a job that I was less and less in love with as the days went on, I would listen to this song on my IPod and invariably it would get me UP for the day ahead. I even bought a copy of the video to watch on the train sometimes. The fun thing about this video is that it's simply joyous. It's simple. A fun, energy/fashion video with not too many special effects. It reminds of something we could all do with a little Premiere magic and editing time......hmmmm....maybe I have my new opening montage for The Kyle Phoenix Show, eh?

Janet Jackson - "No Sleeep" Feat. J. Cole on The Kyle Phoenix Blog

Enjoy!

Plush.

J. Cole.

I'm not sure why it's full of Daddy imagery....mainly because Joe Jackson frightens me (as does Cissy Houston, but that's another blog....)

All that hair! Like the If video but MORE but good.

Fait au complete!

Janet's back...and now has a baby Eissa!!!!!!

I forgive her for canceling concerts to have the baby. What human in their right mind wouldn't? Ok, I read one post from someone who had bought tickets to Europe to go to a concert in Europe..........yeah, that's kind of rough up.

Yayness!

Lil' Kim - How Many Licks (Dirty) [HD] on The Kyle Phoenix Blog

I think if she weren't her own entity, she could've replaced the L in TLC.

I think she'd also equal parts hilarious, provocative, profane, creative, innovative, a savvy business woman and cheeky.

I have this CD and listened to it a lot trying to just wrap my mind around the level of both erotica and stark feminist sexuality she brings.

The hostility, the verve, the fire is amazing.

Christina Aguilera - Dirrty ft. Redman on The Kyle Phoenix Show

When this video first premiered, a roommate and I sat and watched it, silently, gape-jawed. LaChappelle had outdone himself and Christina----well, she snatched---pun there---the naughty crown from Madonna---for a moment. My roommate and I watched it until the end and then left the living room, separately, silently.

Christina had won.

My roommate said she felt that Christina's pussy was officially dirty.

I appreciated teh water spitting scene and the red panties. I mean he could've gone black and then it would've been all dancer-ish or white suggesting a purritanicalism....but red, red said they were all motherfucking in.

I appreciated that.

Furthermore, this reminded me of my days cage dancing, hanging out, dancing for hourrrrrrrrs at LimeLite (who remembers LimeLite). Not the sanitized one, but back in the day when it was officially the church that had become the gates to hell.

One I swear to God, there was this guy who was a lookalike for the porn star Les Stine (or maybe it was him, the joint was THAT kind of a place)

and he and I.....nevermind.......

Suffice to say, I remember when clubs were like this video, wild, freaky, fun, wet, naughty.

Honestly I once danced for so long that I left LimeLite with a white shirt, dirty. On the back. Yes, I'd been on the floor dancing so hard and........nevermind.....

Sorry by Justin Bieber

played over and over on the radio so I went and looked at the video and I LOVE it! it's fun, it's funky, he's not in it, it's interesting visually. My first and only Justin Bieber song that I've ever heard and watched a video for and i liked it. He wasn't in it....but you know, that's cool too. lol

Drake Hotline Bling on The Kyle Phoenix Blog

Enjoy!

Drake's Hotline Bling

is my first Drake song. I knew who he was but then it kept playing on the radio, over and over and over so I looked it up online and was pleasantly both surprised and impressed with the video and the song itself. What I like about it is it's classy, cheeky, minimalistic and it's a hybrid between rap, poetry, and singing---it's like a vocal fusion. I also appreciated that there were multiple kinds and colors of women of varying shapes and sizes and there's a playfulness in both his solo dancing and with the young lady. Four stars!
