Supposedly one of the most expensive videos ever made. Now, as you know, pop icons are dropping like a chorus of flies at a Raid factory the innovative and imagination of the video strikes home. There are so few event videos anymore because it's become de rigeur to create a video. And of course, they're expensive. So something without a storyline and just focused on the visuals is striking. Janet and her team are also accomplished at aligning herself with artists that are not suddenly jumping into hit land but have a longevity to them that will serve over the long-term. What remains to be seen is where her career will go post-50, post baby. There's only so long she should be bouncing around a stage to a remixed Control but at the same time, I don't know if she's built up the chops to be an actress continuously. The pop diva is almost trapped by our familiarity with her to the point where she can't settle down into a nice Netflix series....because you know by 2020 we'll all have a Netflix series, right?

'Prince Darling Nikki' Song and Video on The Kyle Phoenix Blog
I sob at this scene!!
I have a couple of movie scenes that just wreck me because it's so REAL.
Ok, there';s this one and then in the Last of The Mohicans where he has to leave her behind and tells her to do whatever she has to do to stay alive, he will find her. But stay alive! And then he has to leave her (because you know the war tribe is after him but only she and her family are protected under a treaty) and there's this moment where you know he's telling her whatever she has to do, WHATEVER, all is understood and forgiven, as long as she stays alive.
And in Breaking the Waves at the end of the movie....I don't want to spoil it for you. But Bess keeps her promise.
Oooh, oooh and in I Am Love when Tilda Swinton and her maid have an exchange, a look at the end of the film and the soundtrack bursts with their shared, understated rapport---I lost it at the Lincoln Center Cinema!
Oh, back to Darling Nikki.
The guitar work is amazing.

Sheila E- The Glamorous Life on The Kyle Phoenix Blog
Enjoy!
"The Glamorous Life" was originally intended to be recorded by the short-lived replacement act for Vanity 6, girl group Apollonia 6. Prince allegedly had several tracks lined up for the trio to record for their 1984 debut album (and by some accounts, their follow up album as well) but abandoned the idea when he learned that lead singer Apollonia Kotero had no desire to stay in the group beyond her contractual obligations as designed for her movie role in Purple Rain.
Prince decided to give the song to Sheila E. who was fresh off her duet on Prince's "Erotic City". "The Glamorous Life" would be recorded by Sheila and go on to launch her solo career.

Christina Aguilera - Dirrty ft. Redman on The Kyle Phoenix Show
When this video first premiered, a roommate and I sat and watched it, silently, gape-jawed. LaChappelle had outdone himself and Christina----well, she snatched---pun there---the naughty crown from Madonna---for a moment. My roommate and I watched it until the end and then left the living room, separately, silently.
Christina had won.
My roommate said she felt that Christina's pussy was officially dirty.
I appreciated teh water spitting scene and the red panties. I mean he could've gone black and then it would've been all dancer-ish or white suggesting a purritanicalism....but red, red said they were all motherfucking in.
I appreciated that.
Furthermore, this reminded me of my days cage dancing, hanging out, dancing for hourrrrrrrrs at LimeLite (who remembers LimeLite). Not the sanitized one, but back in the day when it was officially the church that had become the gates to hell.
One I swear to God, there was this guy who was a lookalike for the porn star Les Stine (or maybe it was him, the joint was THAT kind of a place)
and he and I.....nevermind.......
Suffice to say, I remember when clubs were like this video, wild, freaky, fun, wet, naughty.
Honestly I once danced for so long that I left LimeLite with a white shirt, dirty. On the back. Yes, I'd been on the floor dancing so hard and........nevermind.....

Enjoy!
Drake's Hotline Bling
is my first Drake song. I knew who he was but then it kept playing on the radio, over and over and over so I looked it up online and was pleasantly both surprised and impressed with the video and the song itself. What I like about it is it's classy, cheeky, minimalistic and it's a hybrid between rap, poetry, and singing---it's like a vocal fusion. I also appreciated that there were multiple kinds and colors of women of varying shapes and sizes and there's a playfulness in both his solo dancing and with the young lady. Four stars!

I created a comic book character to this song.
You'll see the graphic novel soon. But in the meantime, they really turn this song out. By this video they'd gotten down the dance number and Sheila E is more confident in going to town on the drums!

Mary J. Blige - Just Fine on The Kyle Phoenix Blog
Trekking from the C train to a job that I was less and less in love with as the days went on, I would listen to this song on my IPod and invariably it would get me UP for the day ahead. I even bought a copy of the video to watch on the train sometimes. The fun thing about this video is that it's simply joyous. It's simple. A fun, energy/fashion video with not too many special effects. It reminds of something we could all do with a little Premiere magic and editing time......hmmmm....maybe I have my new opening montage for The Kyle Phoenix Show, eh?

Janet Jackson - "No Sleeep" Feat. J. Cole on The Kyle Phoenix Blog
Enjoy!
Plush.
J. Cole.
I'm not sure why it's full of Daddy imagery....mainly because Joe Jackson frightens me (as does Cissy Houston, but that's another blog....)
All that hair! Like the If video but MORE but good.
Fait au complete!
Janet's back...and now has a baby Eissa!!!!!!
I forgive her for canceling concerts to have the baby. What human in their right mind wouldn't? Ok, I read one post from someone who had bought tickets to Europe to go to a concert in Europe..........yeah, that's kind of rough up.
Yayness!

Lil' Kim - How Many Licks (Dirty) [HD] on The Kyle Phoenix Blog
I think if she weren't her own entity, she could've replaced the L in TLC.
I think she'd also equal parts hilarious, provocative, profane, creative, innovative, a savvy business woman and cheeky.
I have this CD and listened to it a lot trying to just wrap my mind around the level of both erotica and stark feminist sexuality she brings.
The hostility, the verve, the fire is amazing.
Lil' Kim.

Enjoy!

Drake Hotline Bling on The Kyle Phoenix Blog
Four stars!
