- I don’t find you attractive just because you’re male. You’re young, old, short, fat, skinny, dumb, really dumb, slow, obtuse emotionally, have bad hygiene, aren’t kind to people, a lazy coworker, you’re poor, you’re White, you’re Black, you’re Latino, you’re Asian, you’re mixed, you have children, you have a girlfriend, you’re an asshole.
Just because you’re male doesn’t mean you’re not funneled through my own personal preferences filter and there are things I’ve noticed about you that turn me off. Now some of the things about you that turn me off may be discriminatory, racist, sexist, classist, etc—-your maleness doesn’t exclude you from discrimination and dick-motize me.
2. Though I personally work in a field, education, that has explicitly included sexual education and written books and videos and a TV show—-I’m not always looking in my casual and/or personal or even professional time to explain the vagaries of sexuality to you. The random BS you come by with—-questions, observations, inaccuracies—-my sexuality doesn’t mean I’m your personal sexuality internet.
It can often feel insulting to have someone talk to you AS your sexuality. I like Gustav Klimt and jellybeans and business books and Japanese furniture and modern dance and cooking and maybe even hunting and sporting events (ok, the food)—-my interests are broad beyond just my sexuality, sexuality, your sexuality, sex.
3. I personally have a lack of interest in discussing the absolute details of my sexuality. What is this an FBI investigation? An interrogation? Men and women who are hetero often think because it’s not them and they reasonably know how their sexuality works that curiosity gives them the right to just ask probing questions about an individual’s sexuality in relationship to celebrities, the news, STDs, life, that guy over there, the mailbox or what they heard about their cousin Clyde.
What I do and why I do what I do, really isn’t any of your business. Sexuality different than hetero doesn’t obviate personal privacy even as yes, I must have equal rights.
Which conversely means that at Xmas parties or outings, I’m not really interested in being treated like, or my partner being treated like, the circus freak acts. Just like I nod politely and chat up your funny looking girlfriend and dumb boyfriend. Do the same. You don’t have to go into giggly, ohmigod gayness mode. You look like an asshole trying to be super PC by overly acknowledging sexuality….and we mock you later on.
