Does President Obama code switch when in all black company?
Yes, I expect all ethnicities and cultures do a form of code switching, especially in front of White people, because we share common ideas, habits, beliefs, or at the very least can relate or sympathize even unconsciously. We code switch to be acceptable to a dominant ideology/culture but that doesn’t mean we agree to it.
Code switching is a form of soft rebellion at it’s height and collaborative negotiation at it’s lowest.
I work with several Black/Latino people who assume many things, actions and beliefs around them are racially motivated. From my perspective of code switching, I've been through enough cultures to know sometimes it is, it isn't or it's unknowable but I can understand and even translate or help move those people through a blocked perspective to a broader one.
I expect all of us who artfully code switch do so in psychic-cultural privacy and intimacy and to facilitate helping others to do so or to save lives/embarrassing situations from erupting.
