Kyle Phoenix Answers: Is it true that when an African American man becomes rich, he tends to date a white woman? Or a White man?

As a brown man who has dated men and women, ill tell you what happens at certain levels of income.

Mid-Middle class and lower under 10k to about 75k a year, you're likely to be around the same culture and ethnicity.
High middle class-$250k a year and up, you start to move in more overlapping Venn diagram circles. Conferences, colleges, parties, political functions, art openings...you can afford access to most things that millionaires can on a say $10k basis---Met opera tickets, Met galas, dinners....it might be a months pay but you can get in.
Here's what happens, those places have a larger percentage of non-Black folk. At Columbia University functions of say 100 adults over 30, I'm generally 1 of 2 or 3. But once in into those places unless I lose my damn mind the Whites, Asians, Middle Eastern, African, European, Latin American folk invite me to more of their social and cultural stuff. So now I'm 1 in 300. But I'm welcomed on my merits. I did a Fulbright Scholars presentation to 26 folk from all over the world, myself and another Black male were two presenters, coincidentally because our educational work overlapped into poverty issues so the invite to the Presidents house now had us and maybe 3 other Black folk and 200 others. One of the coat checkers was in a class of mine, she's Asian.
As just a numbers game I could be a 75k transit worker and have both peer, social, community interactions with Black men and women. That economic class average skews those in attendance.
My family had a second residence in a secured community ...me, my mother, the realtor and Herbie Hancock were the only Blacks amongst 200 homes.
Have I been places full of high middle class to rich ($250k plus a year, $1mil a year) to wealthy Black folk? Wealthy $10mil a year...yes. My mother directed, coordinated a movie premiere at Lincoln center of a Black film and all the Black glitterati came out, but more importantly business people because the sponsor budget was thru a Black union.
Now take those venues, neighborhoods, conferences and consider finding 3 out 10 people attractive and compatible to date. 1 of those three being ltr material for you and for their interests.
The numbers are skewed culturally to resources, class, who can handle your lifestyle (I've dated and several of my Black coworkers were nervous about going to the university presidents house and I had to talk them into a state of calmness)---that might seem minor but your date's comfortability, or mine, with that event, visiting the house in the mountains, coming to political parties, museum functions, dance/art recitals, I prefer good food for a date which means a $100 plus a person.
Because a smaller percentage of us have moved into or through those categories it's like I have to watch who's comfortable in my worlds, I've had both men and women of color, not know what to do or be intimidated but because of simply more Whites in varying classes (and entitlement/privilege , almost a force field) I've found more Whites are more comfortable. That makes me more comfortable and I can enjoy myself.
Now here's something odd I've thought about...i will partner with someone younger, probably won't be from my culture, I will have greater resources (I've dated richer white and Turkish) just by virtue of the circles I keep moving in. Which means my children will be mixed in some way.
Social class movement both isolates us black men and gives us options.
Smile, Kyle

Kyle Phoenix Answers: I'm a gay Black man into Asian men. Why are Asian men not into Blacks?

By generalization and not saying Chinese or Japanese or Hmong you're saying Asian ness is what you want. Isn't it racist to narrowly want someone for something so arbitrary? Maybe your hunger for Asian men towards them is the gross turn off. I know when men talk about how wonderful and sexy and desirable my melanin blackness is I feel creeper out. You know they don't have a cultural investment, never studied us beyond sex and gratification they just want the racial fantasy in their head to be with so that I'm not real, I'm interchangeable.
Because that's what it project, any Asian will do in a pinch....as long as their eyes are Asian, ophthalmic, with Asian hair and maybe an Asian accent and clever far east ways.
Whiteness as privilege has taught us to reduce others to a physical race rather than human beings. They avoid you because its racially demeaning to be wanted because of a social construct projection and not as a real, breathing person.
Would you settle for a half Asian, a quarter? See you're really ordering an ego meal. Asian racist style.

Miscegenation Verses Manipulation Part 1 by Kyle Phoenix

One of the creative sparks for making a new episode of The Kyle Phoenix Show is about White men dating Black men, or more pointedly, White men not dating them by stating that they don't want to date anything other than White men, excluding Black, Latinos, Asians, etc..  How do we reconcile homosexual men, White men practicing a form of social and mating discrimination?  Is it discrimination?  With celebrities do we see them crossing racial lines when showing their same sex relationships?  Why not?

The experience of having a White man hit on you is similar to any other man hitting on you except it comes with a possible slight pinprick that is either simply differences in skin pigmentation or a black hole of prejudice, entitlement, judgment, manipulation, and power dynamics.

How to navigate this?

Well, first, I've learned to listen.  Fetishization occurs when a White men starts telling you how wonderful he thinks people of color are, how rich your culture, how beautiful your skin and how he has so many friends or even a relative who has a level of intimacy with your race.  What White people don't know (we'll even throw this out to if you're another race and do this to someone of a different race as well): it's offensive.  The reason why it's offensive is because it's identity reduction---I know who Asian people are and their experience because I read the Joy Luck Club by Amy Tan.  I deeply see Latino people because I went to Puerto Rico in 2008 for vacation.  My parents went to a Richard Pryor concert therefore I understand the Black experience.  I own a Navajo belt that I bought in New Mexico, I get the Native American experience.  These are examples of Assumptive Racism.

Assumptive Racism is when I believe that object or observation means I understand you, it also slyly means that you're so simple as to be culturally understood simply by acquisition/observation.  This leads us to the concept of Entitlement.  That I can decide to observe, have the right to do so and close the knowledge loop myself without your input, criticism or correction.  I have decided how to see you and that's that.

But what happens if that White man is homosexual?  Hasn't he (or she) experienced a level of Assumptive Prejudice about their own identity and therefore shouldn't they be more open to dealing with and curing their misperceptions and social faux pas.  The error is in believing that humans, particularly those raised in the western hemisphere where racism is so ingrained, would be excluded from it in spite of their sexuality. It's like suggesting they wouldn't have finger prints because they're homosexual. The acceptance or more commonly, rejection of other races as viable dates/partners has to do with MASSIVE misperception based on miscegenation---laws that kept races from breeding together. The hilarious part, is that people who can't breed together, practice it.

The fact that races would practice miscegenation when there is no physical chance of procreating means then that racial discrimination---whether at the audacious height of the KKK or subtle as "non-preference" supports the outline that racism is a mental illness, that particularly Caucasian people suffer from and other races are neurotically attending to---the way we pretend to be another relative to Alzheimer patients to maintain "peace". We need to view those who dance along the continuum as mentally ill.
Also a deeper level to look at even the discussion on is the position of power and entitlement, which are the forces/factors that inform, empower racism. The positionality here is White men towards Black, Asian or Latinos---the assumption that they are in the power choosing position---which is indicative of our own ingrained racism---that White men act/choose and others react. The history of that is what informs White men that it is acceptable to express such discrimination.

Now I'm not saying that preference/choice can't or shouldn't exist, it's when we express it simply through a racialized lens---there's an internalized blindness to racism that racism itself creates. No one, ever wants to be associated with racism---mainly because White people associate it to character rather than how other races see it, which is by actions. On some level Black people could even "forgive" if White people would admit it then they could be seen as personality erring vs. identity.
