I was going to cite most of the facts that Carla did below. There is a further geographic point that most people overlook, much of England wasn't land locked, therefore the entire country could benefit from and develop sustainable trade routes.
The better or root questioning I would press though is why disagree with the assertion that having millions of people as free, directed labor enhanced and increased the evolution of an ideology? What is loss in such an assumption? While I can now hold slavery as a social ill if I were white two hundred years ago and wanted to grow my farm, I would purchase slaves, much as I now use tax loopholes for my business. The times dictates morality and slavery whether African, Indian or Asian is routed in history for thousands of years.
In teaching slavery I teach it was as ubiquitous as chicken consumption is to us now. Some people are vegans but the majority are not and we don't lament the feelings and rights of chickens. But what if in 150 years we develop technology to communicate with animals in full language? Might we then look back on KFC aghast?
We have a different social technology now but still 40 million people are in slavery around the world. Check out the phone/computer you're accessing this feed with. Who made it? Where? Are they probably paid more or less than you? Are they on Quora? Probably not.
Slavery probably contributed 40-60% in terms of accelerated development because the overhead was extremely low.
