Most don't because the dissonance, conflicting reality is too overwhelming. As hard as it is to believe its like The Matrix, coming to understand that you're not trying to bend the spoon, you're shifting to being someone who can bend yourself like a spoon.
Those who shift their thinking are the curious ones, the ones who refute their origins and try different ways of being and thinking. That shift means acceptance of ostracization and isolation and then reintegration of a new framework.
Gil Scott Heron, wrote/said that the first revolution is in your mind, when you consider there might be another way. I can tell you as a teacher I watch adults of all ages choose poverty and self destruction over the natural period of shifting.
