Because that was the intent of the social engineering, training and brainwashing to engender a way of thinking and support it with laws and mores. Doing so has taught us all a way of perception and perspective that we're only now attempting to dismantle, the closest place so far being South Africa's Truth and Reconciliation movement.

What you're talking about is encapsulated in the term hegemony. A system of control and influence that on one level appears good and beneficial but is actually harmful.
