Is it possible for a cult to start online? Answered by Kyle Phoenix

I would argue that Facebook, Twitter, Quota, Instagram, Snap chat, MySpace and others are forms of psychic cyberspace cults. We spend an inordinate amount of time interacting with them primarily with people on those platforms. We pour countless gigs of text and images into them as offering for in group dissemination and then praise in the form of likes, up votes, yeses. We can be sanctioned, bullied, exiled and permanently cut off. We agree to a code of behavior and organize our offline life to stay connected---cell service including internet, tablets, laptops. They can expose us and our secrets or thoughts. We don't recognize them as such which makes them even more dangerous because they're so seamlessly integrated into not just our lives but our mentality.
The true test is how easily you could disengage from them all and how much your life and social network would suffer from the absence of say a year.
Perhaps the better way to frame it is whether it's a cult or a tribe and whether or not the results are positive, benign or negative.
